Preparing for any interview can be nerve-wracking, but phone interviews are often exceptionally stressful as you cannot see the person interviewing you and it feels less personal. Phone interviews are often the first step in the interview process and the team at BCVision wants to ensure you are fully prepared for your interview.
Our team has put together five simple tips to help you impress during your phone interview:
Before your interview
Find a Good Location
Secure a private and quiet location to conduct the interview. You want a spot that does not have a lot of background noise and will not have people passing by to distract you.
Test your phone’s reception in the location to ensure that you will have call clarity. Try this test with a friend or family member, make sure they can hear you clearly and you can hear them clearly, too.
Do Your Research
Take the time to learn as much as you can about the company or organization you are inter-viewing with. Visit their website or visit them on-site to get an understanding of their values and how they operate. Your interviewer will be able to tell if you know what they are all about.
During your interview
Keep Notes Close
Remember that research you conducted? Keep those notes close as you are on the phone and find ways to mention certain topics or key findings you discovered when researching.
This is important during in-person interviews as well but more important over the phone as there is no way to read your lips as you speak. Over-enunciate your words and be sure to speak clearly, do not mumble!
Don’t Forget to Smile
And last, but not least, smile! Even though your interviewer can’t see you, they can sense your enthusiasm. Your tone can change as soon as a smile is on your face, so don’t forget to smile big as you speak.
