Battle Creek: An All-America City

May 16, 2019

The All-America City Award is an award competition that has been put on by the National Civic League since 1949. This competition recognizes communities across the United States that are working to create strong engagement, collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation within their cities.

We are proud to announce that for the second year in a row, Battle Creek has been recognized as an All-America City. In June, leaders, volunteers, and families from our city will head to Denver, Colorado to compete for the national title.

Reflection

To become an All-America City, we reflected on our past, our present, and what our future could hold. In our application, we examined our weaknesses and challenges, as well as strengths like our diverse community. We also identified the progress we have made in a variety of programs across our city.

To become an All-America City, we reflected on our past, our present, and what our future could hold. In our application, we examined our weaknesses and challenges, as well as strengths like our diverse community. We also identified the progress we have made in a variety of programs across our city.

In 2015, we examined areas of Battle Creek that could be improved. With the help and input of our community, we found that we should focus on jobs, talent development, and creating a culture of vitality.

Our Initiatives

These three areas of improvement are highlighted in the initiatives that we submitted in our 2019 All-America City application. The initiatives we highlighted are: Operation Fit, Crisis Intervention Team and Recover Center, and the School Behavioral Health Collaborative.

Operation Fit has been working in schools to decrease childhood obesity in Calhoun County. The Crisis Intervention Team and Recovery Center is a collaborative effort between Summit Pointe and the Battle Creek Police Department which provides training on how to address mental health and substance abuse issues in our community. The School Behavioral Health Collaborative is an initiative by Battle Creek Public Schools that addresses the social and emotional well-being of our students.
