Miles for Memories was founded in 2013 to focus on raising funds for Alzheimer’s disease. In 2014, this expanded to include all types of dementia. Now, the organization works through community events, grants, and programs to help make Battle Creek more aware of issues associated with dementia.
They also contribute a portion of their proceeds towards preventative research, in the hopes that someday, no one will have to experience dementia.
Keeping People Safe
One of the most impactful ways the Miles for Memories is helping the community is through the Safe Returns Programs. These services aim to make sure that every person living with dementia can get home safely.
The Help Home Program allows family members to submit forms with information about the person living with dementia to the police. That way, if the person happens to get lost, they can easily be looked up by their first name, and law enforcement can help escort them home.
The T.E.C.H. (To Ensure they Come Home) Project also helps to make sure people living with dementia get home safely. People in this program receive an I.D. bracelet that can be scanned through a mobile app to provide relevant medical information. Currently, the program is also looking to create a GPS app that will alert loved ones if the person with dementia is not within 20 yards.
Miles for Memories also works to raise funds to support dementia research. They host a wide variety of events, including a community stroll, a murder mystery dinner, and more. You can learn more about their events and how you can involved by clicking here.
