In honor of Earth Day, we thought we’d take a moment to appreciate the beautiful nature that surrounds the Battle Creek community.
Although you may not be able to enjoy the outside in the same ways you typically do, we put together a few great ways to safely enjoy our earth.
Plant a Garden
If you’re looking for a fun way to enjoy nature, try planting some of your vegetable scraps. Old onions may start to sprout, and if you have potatoes in the cupboard with eyes, it’s the perfect time to get some dirt.
Plant seeds from vegetables like peppers or other veggies that are starting to sprout. You can even set these plants on a windowsill, so you don’t have to worry about snow or cold weather. After a while, you’ll have home-grown tasty, nutritious food to share with your family!
Get Outside (Safely)
If you’re really craving the outdoors, try taking a walk with your family. Just be sure to wear masks and stay a safe distance away from other community members.
On your walk, you can try taking pictures of the flowers and trees you see. Pick out which one is each family member’s favorite, or even look up the plants online to see what you found.
If you don’t have a computer, try collecting a few samples of nature around your house or on trails. When you get back home, you and your family can glue them to a piece of paper or press them between the pages of a book to keep beautiful nature all year round!
Another great way to get outside safely is to pull out a ball and play some backyard sports. Or maybe you live in an area that would be great for building a fort. Just make sure to wear a mask if you’re going to be in a public area and only play with other people in your family.
Sometimes it might not seem like it, but there are plenty of things you can do together. You can kick around a soccer ball, play catch with a baseball, play volleyball, or even blow up a balloon and hit it back and forth to keep it from touching the ground. As long as you’re outside, you’re celebrating nature!
We know this can be a hard time for people in our community. If you need help, check out our list of community resources. If you aren’t struggling, try reading our ideas on how to give back to the community. Either way, we look forward to when we’ll all be able to enjoy Battle Creek together again!
