Kirk found out about the fund through a networking event in Battle Creek for people in the community seeking entrepreneurship opportunities.
The loan has impacted Kirk and Massage Green Spa in many ways, including creating a feeling of a sense of belonging in the community. “Someone cared (about) what I was doing in business and being a black woman in the community,” she shares.
The loan has also given Massage Green Spa the ability to update technology that will save time for the staff and, “…create better customer service, which will bring in more guests to be helped simultaneously.” Eco-friendly interior updates are also being made to the space itself.
“Small businesses are important to the community to keep the community employed…[and] have our own identity in our neighborhood,” Kirk explains. “Small businesses are important…to give us a sense of ownership to employ ourselves and others in the community. This will help us grow and add to the next generation.”
Kirk says that her favorite thing about Battle Creek is that the city was built on health and wellness: “Breakfast is the most important part of the day. That is definitely wellness.”
Kirk was born and raised in Battle Creek and has been a part of the community for 51 years. She grew up with a large amount of family here. “This city…gives me a sense of home and I want guests and people to feel that when they visit my spa.”
